PROGRESS IS POSSIBLE
COLLABORATION IS KEY
WHO WE ARE
Based in the Hāmākua region on Hawaiʻi Island, we are a close-knit team of international development professionals committed to supporting economic and social progress. Regardless of region, we believe people and organizations intuitively want happier, healthier communities. But solving the problems to make that happen takes an understanding of complex systems - economic, social, and cultural - and a genuinely collaborative approach - with community members, business, government, and nonprofits.
THINK SYSTEMICALLY
ACT COLLECTIVELY
WHAT WE DO
The combination of systems thinking and collective impact make a powerful duo for facilitating the kind of change everyone wants to see. Its application is growing in countries and communities around the globe. If you want to solve complex social or economic problems, think systemically and act collectively. You might discover it can be a new way to solve old problems.

A note on Hawaiian diacritical marks:
Hāmākua Institute recognizes the use of diacritical markings of the Hawaiian language, including the ‘okina [‘] (which represents a glottal stop – a consonant) and the kahakō [-] (a macron used to indicate long vowels). Due, however, to technological constraints and our desire to provide a consistent experience around the globe, the diacritical marks will not be used on this website. Hāmākua Institute will continue to use the kahakō in it's designed logotype.
